GFSH Newsletter June 2006

Hi folks,

Exciting developments here - A Guide for Self-Healing website is being redesigned with a fresh new look, more free articles and resources, as well as the ongoing option to use my private consulting services.

I’ll also be upgrading to a blog format that you can subscribe to in place of these text-format newsletters, so stay tuned!

This month I’ll share with you a few tidbits..

EFT IS HOMEOPATHIC!

Many of you are familiar with EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), something I talk about often, because it’s so effective as a tool for managing blocked energy patterns that we experience as emotional upset, allergies,
addictions, etc.

EFT is versatile, and there’s not just one set way to use it. But in my experience personally and working with many people, I like to use a stream-of-consciousness process.

You simply focus on the issue at hand, and allow whatever thought you have about the issue to bubble up. With EFT tapping, soon you’re homing in on the real issue. Often what we’re perceiving as the issue is just part of our “emotional armoring,” so this helps break through.

About how it works.. it’s essentially working on the law of similars, “Like cures like,” which is the curative principle of Homeopathy. The problem that you’re experiencing is really an impingement on your subtle energy body. When you state the problem, you’re creating a resonance with that impingement. But two similar things can’t occupy the same space, so the impingement is released.

It’s a bit like using your own thought as a homeopathic remedy.

Now, you can’t just go around stating, “I’m terrifed, angry and upset”, and expect problems to go away! The key with EFT is that you’re setting up a bit of a trance state, which alters the energy of what you’re saying, so you’re not just reinforcing the problem (as our ruminating thoughts habitually do).

Whenever we have a negative thought, we’re in a trance state already, so there’s nothing unusual about trance.. we go in and out of them all through the day. But this way, you’re deliberatly creating a type of trance to wake you up from the trance you’re already in!

EFT is a great tool, and in my experience it helps everyone to some extent. Sometimes there are deeper blockages that
need to be addressed in other ways as well, but EFT is always a good adjunct to whatever else you’re working with.

WHEN “NEW STUDIES SHOW…”

It seems that whatever the medical establishment wants to control, they’ll control it. The studies will always be in their favor, because studies are largely not true science. If we think that research should be independent and unbiased, we need to look elsewhere.

There are subtle techniques being used in every field these days, which on the surface may look like real research, but the outcomes are predetermined. In medicine, even when one drug fails, they simply create new markets for it or it turns up under a different name later on.

I even saw an article in the Harvard newspaper that talked about clinical trials on a new drug which is an “improved” version of the old Thalidomide, the drug that caused severe birth defects! They say this one “appears” to lack some of the more common side effects of Thalidomide. And it appears that people actually agreed to participate in the trials. Now they’re using it for certain cancers.

I think it’s kind of interesting to look at these things as exercises in discernment. There was a statistics professor who gave his first-year students medical studies to look at to see if they could recognize the logical fallacies, and even the beginning students were able to find them!

I don’t expect anything from such research except for it to fulfill its own agenda, which it always does quite reliably. When you don’t expect anything but practice discernment, you can find the truth wherever it happens to be, even if it comes in a form that you weren’t expecting.

LEARN HOMEOPATHY AT HOME!

“Homeopathy at Home, Work and Play” is an 80-hour course given by the Hahnemann College for Heilkunst. You can study
at home and have email contact with a tutor who is an experienced HCH practitioner.

This is an immensely valuable training, as it gives you thorough knowledge of homeopathy and Heilkunst in first-aid, emergency situations pending expert evaluation and treatment. This gives you all the tools you need to handle such situations as food poisonings, insect bites, burns, sprains, colds, earaches, coughs and other situations requiring immediate aid. Often, the need for further treatment is eliminated and recovery is speeded up considerably.

Enjoy the healing sunshine this summer,

GFSH Newsletter April 2006: Bird Flu Hype

Bird Flu Hype

Hi folks, and happy spring!

I thought I’d send a short newsletter with some excellent links on the issue of “Bird Flu.”

I think this information will help people to understand that the FLU IS NOT CONTAGIOUS, in terms of the conventional model of infectious disease that we’re all familiar with.
1. First, Drs. Rudi Verspoor and Patty Smith-Verspoor of the Hahnemann Center for Heilkunst have put up a podcast
where they discuss this topic and provide some important insights.

http://web.mac.com/pattys

It may take a few minutes to load in your browser, but the first podcast on “Why the Flu is Not Contagious” is up and
running now. I’m looking forward to more in the near future from the “Dr Rudi and Dr Patty show.” :)

2. Dr. Sherri Tenpenny has a new website called Bird Flu Hype, http://www.birdfluhype.com, filled with lots of resources.

Also check out a revealing interview with her, which for some reason isn’t on her website, but it’s here:

http://www.proliberty.com/observer/20060312.htm

What I found particularly interesting was the part about the “10-step recipe” for “risk communication.” –

“Risk communication is a field that has evolved from several different fields of study such as health education, public relations, and psychology. A plan for communicating the ‘international risk’ of bird flu has led to the development of a new 10-step ‘recipe’ crafted by Princeton-based risk communication experts Peter M. Sandman, Ph.D, and his spouse, Jody Lanard, MD, a psychiatrist.”

Sounds like the *idea* of risk is the only real communicable disease here ;-)

COD LIVER OIL

Drs Rudi and Patty highly recommend cod liver oil as one of the best ways to support the immune system. Carlson’s and
Nordic Naturals are good brands. Use the liquid only, not the capsules.

They’re flavored with natural fruit extracts, and taste fine, not fishy at all. I sometimes take it straight with a vegetable juice chaser, or mix it in with salad dressing. Taking it with something else oily disguises it completely, but even straight the taste is very mild.

Once the bottle is opened, it lasts 3-4 months in the refrigerator.

A friend of mine reported that the Nordic Naturals orange flavor tastes fine, although the other flavors weren’t as good. I use the orange flavor and also the Carlson’s brand which is lemon flavored.

Even in spring and summer, many of us aren’t getting enough exposure to sunlight to meet our Vitamin D requirement..
unless we’re living on a tropical beach :)

Also we need the DHA and EPA in cod liver oil for so many metabolic functions that I might as well not list them all, and just say: Take your CLO! :)

Be well,
Karen

GFSH Newsletter March 2006: Hype vs Discernment

Hype vs Discernment

1. Separating the Wheat from the Chaff

I decided this month to talk about how we go about discerning the truth among all the conflicting information we hear about health and healing. In one sense it can be really confusing and frustrating, when we just want to know what to do for ourselves and our families, but we don’t know how to judge the validity of what we’re hearing.

In another sense, the process of developing discernment, whether it’s to decide whether soy foods are healthy or to decide anything else in life, can be part of a deeper process of personal and spiritual development. When you’re seeking the truth and are willing to let go of any favorite beliefs if they turn out to be false, even though you sometimes feel like you’re a bit lost in the dark, you’re really engaging in a transformative process that takes you beyond merely figuring out the answer you were looking for.

Your own critical thinking, given some sound guidance, is the real key. That can’t be taught in the hundreds of health newsletters that keep talking about some new supplement that’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.

It’s a bit like reading individual recipes with detailed instructions on cooking certain dishes, but after you’ve accumulated dozens of recipes and can follow them by rote, you find that you still don’t really know how to cook intuitively. That’s because you weren’t taught the underlying principles involved.

Mostly in the natural healing field we find methods that are largely hit-or-miss, offering a hodgepodge of therapies, pills to swallow, special diets, and we’re never trained to discern for ourselves which among the multitude of stuff we really need.

I’ll be talking about this more in future newsletters, but I just wanted to introduce the idea that there are just as many fallacies in the world of natural healing as there are in the world of conventional medicine. The truth doesn’t come neatly labeled for us, and sometimes things come in packages of half-truths, and we need to develop a kind of discernment that can spot the red flags and know when to stop and question and not just swallow whole what we read.

To continue reading about this, here’s an article I just posted on my website:
http://www.guideforselfhealing.com/hypevsdiscernment.html

2. The “LABEL-FREE” diet. :-)

Well, with this I’m partly I’m doing a bit of a sendup of popular diets, just in case you were envisioning a new bestseller there :). But there actually is some useful advice here, because I DID promise you practical tips in each newsletter, and here’s one that can make a big difference:

* Avoid all forms of MSG in foods and supplements.

That means not just MSG added to foods, but all the *hidden* sources of MSG. These days practically EVERY packaged/processed food is really a food “product” with a label that lists dozens of ingredients. And almost all of those contain forms of MSG or free glutamic acid (same thing for all practical purposes), as a result of processing, even when the manufacturer claims that no MSG is added to their product.

Food manufacturers are NOT required to list MSG on the label if MSG is contained within another ingredient!

Some of the hidden sources of MSG that you’ll see on food labels are:

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein
Yeast extract or autolyzed yeast
Maltodextrin
Sodium and calcium caseinate

Some ingredients that *often* contain MSG are:

Any kind of “protein” (soy protein, whey protein, etc.)
Natural flavoring
carrageenan
milk powder
cornstarch
Barley malt
caramel flavoring

What’s so bad about MSG?
Long story short, MSG is a potent neurotoxin, whether or not a person notices any negative reactions to it in the short run. Many people are sensitive to it; there are many symptoms associated with it, and it’s in practically every food product in the supermarket that has a list of ingredients.

One of the most common effects of MSG is: Overeating and food cravings. It really boils down to the fact that all the processed foods that people are eating are causing pervasive eating disorders. MSG isn’t the only factor there, of course, but it’s a major contributor. And there are even much more damaging health effects associated with MSG.

So here’s my “LABEL-FREE” diet.

If anyone who’s trying to lose weight or just get healthier would first eliminate or reduce the processed foods and eat simple unprocessed foods..in other words, foods that are foods and not “food products” , and if that’s the *only* dietary adjustment they make, I think that will go a long way toward correcting the underlying problems.

Whether it helps your symptoms 100% or just 25%, it’s an important first step to eliminate the dietary factors that might be causing or exacerbating the problems. That’s a very broad brush stroke, and dietary needs will be more individual, but it’s often helpful to do a broad brush stroke first to see how much can be covered with a very simple, basic approach.

Just as a reminder, foods without labels would be foods like meats cooked from scratch, vegetables, fruits, rice, potatoes, good quality fats like avocados, olive oil, virgin coconut oil.. not being concerned at all about calories or fat, but just avoiding processed food and eating simple foods *without labels*,

There’s more. See http://www.msgtruth.org for more complete information about hidden sources of MSG and health effects.

Thanks for reading, and be well!

-Karen

A Guide for Self-Healing Newsletter January 2006

Hi folks,

This month’s installment will be a collection of quick tips, with no real connecting theme other than usefulness!

——>> INTU-FLOW, a new approach to exercise

This is something new from coach Scott Sonnon, looks like the best integrated exercise program I’ve ever seen. It
helps you restore your body’s natural flow of movement, rather than conventional exercise routines that often have
you forcing things to gain strength, while inadvertently creating other tensions and stresses at the same time. The
Intu-Flow program includes 3 DVD’s, a few special weights called clubbells.

It looks fascinating and actually entertaining!

* Yoga without unnecessary contortion.
* Tai Chi without tedious complication.
* Meditation without fatigue and boredom.
* Exercise without limits.

“Can you remember what it was like to want to climb trees and roll around in the grass? Can you believe for a moment
that the only obstacle between you and this kind of joyful freedom is the years of stress and tension accumulating
over time in your mind and body resulting in chronic pain, fatigue, illness and emotional instability. The methods
found in Intu-Flow™ effectively lead to the elimination of pain and related emotional disturbances.”

——>> CLEAR NASAL CONGESTION without suppressive drugs

Okay, I know this is not the most popular subject, but bear with me.. I’m sure almost everyone *would* be interested in
a really effective remedy for this! — Nasal irrigation.

I had some cold symptoms recently, so I was more motivated than usual to try doing some nasal irrigation, something I
knew was terrific but was a bit skittish to actually try. When you’re miserable from congestion and can’t sleep, and
all the usual herbal remedies don’t work well enough, you can get past skittish pretty fast!

Essentially, the process involves putting salt water into one nostril and having it flow out the other. Once you get
the hang of it, it’s really very easy and not uncomfortable at all. Most of us have had the unpleasant experience of
inadvertently inhaling ocean water, but the normal saline that you use for nasal irrigation is less salty and exactly
the same salinity as the body’s fluids, so it doesn’t burn.

And although you’re only putting the water into the nasal passage, it stimulates the sinuses to clear out as well, so
this is wonderful for all sorts of upper respiratory infections.

I found that it gave me immediate relief but then the congestion came back, so I had to keep doing the irrigation
a few times a day for a few days. It was worth it.

There are a few different ways to do the irrigation –

  • The traditional Ayurvedic neti pot,
    www.jalanetipot.com
  • Hydro Pulse, a machine like a water pik that provides a pulsating flow
    http://www.pharmacy-solutions.com/hp.htm
  • Just a simple syringe filled with the proper salt solution.

I really didn’t like the idea at all, at first, so believe me, it’s not just some advanced yoga practice, and anyone including kids can do it! It really helps. Just be sure to read instructions carefully, use purified water and the right amount of non-iodized salt.

——>> MAIL ORDER SOURCES of wholesome nutrient-dense foods

I just added a new Resources page to my website:
http://www.guideforselfhealing.com/?page_id=8

Not everyone can get grass-fed meats and raw dairy products locally, so do consider mail ordering from these trusted
sources. Also, the raw honey from Todd Hardie up in Vermont, at Honey Gardens Apiaries, is amazing!

——>> “TOWERBUSTERS” clear negative energy

Check out Dennis Griffin’s new site, www.towerbusters.com.
These orgone generators clear the environment of negative energy, and are great to put around the house on all sources of electromagnetic fields like TV’s and computers.

There are many other good vendors of orgone generators (orgonite), so check them out too, on my Links page,
http://www.guideforselfhealing.org/?page_id=9

——>> MUSIC FOR MOTIVATION

One reason why we all love music is because it’s powerful, moving. Here’s a quick and fun way to use music to motivate
you to do whatever it is you need to do.

Right now, think about a song that motivates you particularly, that has a bright and upbeat energy which
will help you work or do whatever you need to be doing.
Think of it, hum it or whistle it briefly.

Then make a list of ten songs that motivate you. That’s it!

Then if you want to, you can make a “success playlist” for yourself, or sing, hum and whistle any of your favorites
any time to give you an instant boost.

That’s all for now,
Warm winter wishes,

Karen
